Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What can artists expect when participating in BYOB?

As a participating artist, we provide you with two power outlets, a white projection wall of 2 m×2 m, and a handy storage box for your materials. Additionally, we'll take care of food and drinks: you'll receive soup and snacks, and you can exchange your BYOB tokens for refreshments at the bar.

Can I just come by to look at the exhibition?

Absolutely! Everyone is warmly welcome. Feel free to bring all your friends and family to view the artworks and talk to the artists starting from 7:00 PM.

What if I need more than 2 m2 of projection space?

No problem at all. Just send an email to byob@nerdlab.be, and we will work together to find a suitable spot for your larger installation.

Can I borrow a beamer (projector) from Nerdlab?

This is only possible as a last resort. We kindly ask you to first check within your own network: ask your parents if they can borrow one from their work, inquire at your university's lending service, or ask your neighbours. We simply don't have enough projectors available to provide one for everyone.

Is it possible to view the location prior to the event?

Unfortunately, we do not organise any viewings of the space in advance. Bring Your Own Beamer is a spontaneous pop-up exhibition where we celebrate the magic and serendipity that emerge during a single evening. For those who still wish to prepare: the majority of the location (Sint-Pietersabdij) is open to the public during its regular opening hours.

BYOB takes place on the ground floor or lower level. If you have specific questions about the location, please feel free to contact us via byob@nerdlab.be.

Do we get paid for our participation?

BYOB is an open platform where everyone can show what they want; it is explicitly not a curated exhibition. Therefore, we do not pay you with money, but with our appreciation and BYOB tokens. These tokens can be used for refreshments during the event.

Can I easily load and unload as an artist?

Loading and unloading is definitely possible! Drive via the Kantienberg; that way, you can easily stop in front of the building to load and unload your equipment.

Is there nearby parking available?

You can certainly park in the vicinity. There is an underground parking garage at Sint-Pietersplein. If this one is full, you can use parking Zuid, which is only a 10-minute walk to the Sint-Pietersabdij.

Do I need to bring my own cables and adapters?

Yes, we only provide power. Be sure to bring all your own extension cables, power strips, and adapters (e.g., HDMI to USB-C) that you need to connect your projector to your device. This is essential for a smooth setup!

Is there WiFi available for my installation?

A public WiFi network is available, but due to the many visitors and projections, we strongly advise you to store and play content locally to avoid connection issues.

A Beautiful Scene

Bring Your Own Beamer, or simply 'BYOB,' is an idea conceived by the Dutch artist Rafaël Rozendaal. Besides cheese and croquettes from vending machines, it's also one of the coolest Dutch export products. BYOB is an 'open-source exhibition concept': anyone can organize one, and everyone can participate, whether you're a novice or a professional artist, VJ, visual designer, part of a collective, an organization, or just an enthusiast. All you need to do is bring your own projector.
