🌿 Secrets of the Garden: Decoding Nature

Wat gebeurt er als je niet alleen naar de natuur kijkt, maar er écht naar leert luisteren?

De voorbije maanden gingen we samen op luisteravontuur. Tijdens zeven bugs doken we in de verborgen wereld van geluid, technologie en natuur. We bouwden microfoons, luisterden naar vogels, maakten geluid zichtbaar en ontdekten hoe technologie ons kan helpen om de natuur op een andere manier te ervaren.

🐞 Bug 1: Active Nature Listening Session

Onze eerste missie bracht ons naar de Damvallei. Zonder gadgets, zonder schermen, gewoon met onze oren op scherp. Al snel ontdekten we dat een natuurgebied eigenlijk één grote soundtrack is. Vogelzang, ruisende bladeren, zoemende insecten en zelfs menselijke geluiden vormden samen een verrassend complex concert.

🎙️ Bug 2: Building DIY Listening Tools

Tijd om onze luisterskills te upgraden. We bouwden onze eigen contactmicrofoons, richtmicrofoons en parabolische microfoons. Wat begon als een makerssessie eindigde met een hele verzameling microfonen waarmee we geluiden konden opsporen die normaal verborgen blijven.

🌾 Bug 3: Listening Walk with Microphones

Met onze zelfgemaakte microfoons trokken we opnieuw de natuur in. En plots ging er een compleet nieuwe wereld open. Geluiden kwamen dichterbij, details werden hoorbaar en zelfs de kleinste bewoners van de Damvallei kregen een stem. Tegelijk merkten we hoe aanwezig verkeer, vliegtuigen en andere menselijke geluiden zijn in het landschap.

📊 Bug 4: Analysis of Audio Recordings

Wat als je geluid niet alleen hoort, maar ook ziet? Met Audacity, Sonic Visualiser en BirdNET veranderden onze opnames in kleurrijke patronen, golven en frequenties. Een soort geheime taal van de natuur die langzaam zichtbaar werd.

🎛️ Bug 5: Resynthesising Natural Sounds

Daarna draaiden we de rollen om. In plaats van naar natuurgeluiden te luisteren, gingen we ze zelf reconstrueren. Met Max en Pure Data experimenteerden we met vogelzang, kikkers en andere geluiden uit het ecosysteem. Niet om ze perfect na te maken, maar om beter te begrijpen hoe ze werken.

🔊 Bug 6: Natural Amplification

Kan de natuur ons iets leren over luidsprekers? Blijkbaar wel. Tijdens deze bug onderzochten we hoe vormen geluid kunnen versterken en sturen. Geïnspireerd door natuurlijke structuren bouwden we experimentele speakers en speelden we met akoestiek.

Tijd om de deuren open te zetten. Tijdens onze publieke presentatie konden bezoekers luisteren naar soundscapes uit de Damvallei, experimenteren met onze microfoons en ontdekken hoe natuur, technologie en creativiteit samenkomen in werkende installaties.

🚀 Op weg naar Chapter 2

Wat begon met één simpele vraag, groeide uit tot een zoektocht vol experimenten, verwondering en nieuwe inzichten. Door te luisteren, bouwen, analyseren en creëren ontdekten we niet alleen hoe rijk de natuur klinkt, maar ook hoe kwetsbaar ze is.

En dit blijkt nog maar het begin te zijn! 👀🌱

🌿 Secrets of the Garden: Decoding Nature

What happens when you don’t just look at nature, but really learn to listen to it?

Over the past months, we went on a listening adventure together. Across seven bugs, we dived into the hidden world of sound, technology and nature. We built microphones, listened to birds, made sound visible and discovered how technology can help us experience nature in a completely different way.

🐞 Bug 1: Active Nature Listening Session

Our first mission took us to the Damvallei. No gadgets, no screens — just our ears wide open. It didn’t take long to realise that a natural area is actually one big soundtrack. Birdsong, rustling leaves, buzzing insects and even human noise formed a surprisingly complex concert.

🎙️ Bug 2: Building DIY Listening Tools

Time to upgrade our listening skills. We built our own contact microphones, directional microphones and parabolic microphones. What started as a maker session turned into a full toolbox for discovering sounds that are usually hidden from us.

🌾 Bug 3: Listening Walk with Microphones

With our self-built listening microphones, we went back into nature. And suddenly, a whole new world opened up. Sounds came closer, details became clearer and even the smallest creatures of the Damvallei seemed to speak. At the same time, we became aware of how present traffic, airplanes and other human sounds are in the landscape.

📊 Bug 4: Analysis of Audio Recordings

What if you could not only hear sound, but also see it? Using Audacity, Sonic Visualiser and BirdNET, our recordings turned into colourful patterns, waves and frequencies. A kind of secret language of nature slowly revealed itself.

🎛️ Bug 5: Resynthesising Natural Sounds

Then we flipped the process. Instead of just listening to nature, we started rebuilding it. With Max and Pure Data, we experimented with recreating bird songs, frog calls and other ecosystem sounds. Not to copy them perfectly, but to understand how they are built.

🔊 Bug 6: Natural Amplification

Can nature teach us something about speakers? It turns out it can. In this bug, we explored how shapes can guide and amplify sound. Inspired by natural structures, we built experimental speakers and played with acoustics.

🖼️ Bug 7: Installation & Public Presentation

Time to open the doors. During our public presentation, visitors could listen to soundscapes from the Damvallei, experiment with our microphones and discover how nature, technology and creativity come together in working installations.

🚀 On the Way to Chapter 2

What started with one simple question grew into a journey full of experiments, curiosity and discovery. By listening, building, analysing and creating, we not only learned how rich nature sounds — we also discovered how fragile it is.

One thing is certain: this story is far from over. 👀🌱
