The Room of Resonance

The Room of Resonance is a poetic AR Fable that tells a story about our media consumption behavior and prejudices/biases that we collect using algorithms that push us into echo chambers.

by Laurien Michiels

The story starts with a prologue that introduces the court jester, after which you can explore 3 echo chambers of 3 animals, namely Reyn the Fox, Clancy the Sardien and Eugène the Peacock. Each echo chamber also contains 3 objects with which you can interact, allowing the poetic story to unfold. The experience ends with an epilogue and a moment of reflection.

The format of the work functions via a physical book and a tablet/smartphone. The AR scene is projected from the book using image tracking, similar to a pop-up book, but virtual.

Laurien Michiels is a digital creative from Belgium who obtained a master's degree in Linguistics and Literature (English & Scandinavian Studies) from Ghent University, Belgium and a second master's degree in Digital Narratives from the International Film School in Cologne, Germany. Both degrees have been fundamental to her development as an artist and researcher, influencing their art on topics within Digital Humanities and New Media studies. Laurien would like to further discuss problematic phenomena in social cyberspace, such as the proliferation of echo chambers and their threat to critical thinking skills. Through the use of immersive storytelling, it aims to de- and reconstruct traditional ways of storytelling, as well as to explore how innovation and tradition can coexist instead of competing with each other.
